Accountability: Power, Performance, and Professionalism
Many people talk about accountability as good, wanted and often missing; however, when it comes down to it they still struggle with holding themselves and others accountable. The word accountability itself has gotten a bad rap. It often stimulates feelings of guilt, shame and blame rather than empowerment and motivation. When we flip the script, being accountable and generating accountability in others become the secret sauce to ensure success–both individually and organizational.
In working in a variety of industries and organizations over the past 15 years, we’ve noticed an insufficient relationship to and capacity for accountability from the newest employee to the most senior veteran. It is one of the most common “missings” for organizational performance.
In this course, we provide a new model for accountability that allows for new levels of performance, personal power, and professionalism:
- Proactively generate accountability as a necessary condition for success rather than something that happens after the fact
- Be accountable for any outcome regardless of organizational rank or task assignment
- Incorporate accountability into agreements with others
- Hold others accountable in a way that empowers and supports commitments
- Create an accountable organizing structure for one’s commitments
- Give and receive accountable feedback

Course Syllabus
Introduction Module
Welcome to Accountability: Power, Performance, and Professionalism. Get an overview of the course and how to engage in a way that will support you to get the promised course outcomes.
Module 1: Accountability as a Way of Being
In Module 1, we distinguish the common definition of accountability as a role or a list of responsibilities from the alternative definition: a way of being, thinking, speaking and acting that supports success.
Module 2: Accounting for Your Word
In Module 2, we look at all the ways in which we give our word. Then, we explore how to maintain relationships and outcomes, even when we cannot fulfill on our word in the time or to the standard we promised.
Module 3: Organizing for Accountability
In Module 3, we look at practices that support performance – reorienting ourselves from a zombie-like focus on ‘getting-it-all-done’ to accountable action through existence and completion.
Module 4: Creating Clear Agreements with Others
In Module 4, we shift our attention in the course from self-accountability to generating accountability in others – first by ensuring we are in partnership with others in a way that naturally generates action.
Module 5: Organizational Practices and Structures
In Module 5, we name frameworks that will allow for consistency in your organization, supporting team member accountability to their commitments (rather than to a person).
Module 6: Giving and Receiving Assessments
In Module 6, we explore how to work with our opinions and the opinions of others to ground them in reality, ensuring the conversations we have and the actions we take are powerful and impactful.
Module 7: Bringing It All Together
In Module 7, we review what we have covered in this course and looked at how it all fits together.
